All Around Me - Chapter 5 - Gig

Writer's Note - Yeah, I know I'm doing it out of sequence, but I got hit by some inspiration, and I want to get it out now. Special thanks to jones for the inspiration.

I was sitting on the couch, reading, when Hank and Ian burst in waving a newspaper.

"Hey man, check this out!" Hank shoved it into my hands and pointed.

Thursday Dec. 14, at the Cog Factory
From Ludlow, Ohio
The Idiots, with special guests Sealed Whiskey Kiss

I looked back up at them. Hank was staring at me, smiling and nodding, and Ian was pacing like a madman.

"Man, we NEED to do this show."
"Fine, no problem, it's only like a $5 cover. I've never seen the Idiots, I missed them the last time they were in Lincoln."
Ian came over and sat on the couch next to me. "No man, you don't get it, Wren McCormack needs to play that show."

It sunk in.

"What? Are you guys kidding?"
"Not at all."
"Deadly serious."
"It's not going to happen."
"Why not?"
"The Cog? They'll never let us play with them."
"No see, here's the thing. We write directly to Greener. You still have his address, right?"
"Well, yeah, but..."
"And you just ask him to add us to the bill. We don't even have to get paid."

I looked back and forth between them. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. They wanted to put the band back together.

"Look, you're talking about Wren, a country-rock-bluegrass-honkeytonk band... playing with the Idiots."
"Yeah yeah."
Hank pointed at me, "You're the one who said we could hold our own with anyone."
"I meant with other bands who sound like us, not with a fucking punk band."

Ian got up and started pacing again. "Well, what about that 'punk spirit' you always used to talk about? 'Putting the ass back in bluegrass' and shit?"
"Dude, I fucking yodel when I sing." I was arguing with them, but I was also laughing, thinking of the possibilities.
Hank saw the crack and pressed on it. "Man, all we're saying is one show. One. If it sucks, we pack it up again."
I shook my head, laughing. "Mark will never do it."
Ian clapped his hands, "He will, I already talked to him."

I sat there and smiled, the adrenaline pumping. They looked at me expectantly.

"Besides man, now you can sing that song to that sexy gi-tar player they got." Hank new that would do it.
"Yeah yeah." Ian rubbed his hands together in glee.

I sighed heavily and slapped my palms against my thighs. "What the fuck, I'll e-mail him tonight."
